Those who don't want to learn, will learn little using a computer.
But for those who are interested in learning, a PC can really help.
Computer tests, computer marking ?!
One kind of PC learning is the test, on the internet or on a disk, which the computer marks. These can look very good and have a fun game format, and child or adult may like them a first time and maybe a second. But if you then just leave a younger child to it, then they will soon give up on it. Unlike teacher or parent, the computer marks but doesn't CARE. And too much of that will put younger kids off learning. It works much better if a teacher or parent goes through it alongside younger children, or if they use it at school. Otherwise, unassisted this kind of PC or online learning is really only suited to older children or adults, for practice.Computer lessons ?!
A second kind of PC learning is the type that tries to teach as a teacher might in class. Information and explanation is presented, perhaps with drawings or film. These can be good for child or adult, and fun. But again your computer clearly doesn't CARE about any learning, so it is much better if a teacher or parent goes through it alongside younger children when it can be very good. Unassisted, again this kind of PC or online learning can really only help older children or adults.Learn for a project ?!
For this third kind of learning the PC is at its strongest. If you have a project, or an essay to write, or history homework to do, then a computer can help you find out what you need to know. Search the internet or an encyclopedia disk (computer magazines often give one). Of course a younger child may waste ages finding little, and may need some help searching an encyclopedia or on-line. But here the computer is at its most useful for learning. [For a good internet search, first get clear what you want. And the best search engines now use Bing, like the Alexa search engine that you can download at the bottom of our Bid page.
