Be-Bop-A-Lula, Gene Vincent and Imelda May

The 1956 song 'Be Bop A Lula' by Gene Vincent was an early rock classic. It is a somewhat odd lyric and its writing seems a bit of a mystery. It may have started as 'Bebopper Lulu' inspired by the then popular cartoon girl character 'Little Lulu' and a bebop rock lyric more like the same-year song 'Long Tall Sally' than the 'Tutti Frutti' song that became ?

Be Bop A Lula, by Gene Vincent - 1956

Well, Be Bop A Lula she's my baby
Be Bop A Lula I don't mean maybe
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby
Be Bop A Lula I don't mean maybe
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby doll, my baby doll, my baby doll.

Well, she's the gal in the red blue jeans
She's the queen of all the teens
She's the woman that I know
She's the woman that loves me so.
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby
Be Bop A Lula I don't mean maybe
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby doll, my baby doll, my baby doll.

Well, now she's the woman that's got that beat
She's the woman with the flyin' feet
She's the woman that walks around the store
She's the woman that yells more, more, more, more.
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby
Be Bop A Lula I don't mean maybe
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby doll, my baby doll, my baby doll.

Well, Be Bop A Lula she's my baby
Be Bop A Lula I don't mean maybe
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby
Be Bop A Lula I don't mean maybe
Be Bop A Lula she's my baby doll, my baby doll, my baby doll.

You can hear Gene Vincent sing this live below, though his original recording maybe sounded a bit better.

Yes a very good Gene Vincent early rock song. A very good modern rock-jazz singer is Imelda May who you can see below. I was dancing jive to jazz quite like this, though with more brass, in the 1960's ;

Johnny Got A Boom Boom, Imelda May (2009, Love Tattoo)
