Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The times they are a-changin'

At the end of this month a new DVD comes out, followed by the TV filming a week later, of No Direction Home : Bob Dylan.

Dylan was surely a great songwriter, and here is one of my favourite Dylan songs (though maybe not his best ?) ;

The times they are a-changin', by Bob Dylan

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Hear this Joan Baez version,

Very good Digiwizz, and here is one of Dylan's biggest hits that I really like ;

Mr. Tambourine Man, by Bob Dylan

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand,
Vanished from my hand,
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet,
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Though you might hear laughin', spinnin', swingin' madly across the sun,
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'.
And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind,
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're
Seein' that he's chasing.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Yes I like Dylan's Mr Tambourine Man too Clare - but prefer The Byrds version really.

A fairly skillful comedian wrote a funny parody Of Mr Tambourine Man ;

I Made a Tangerine Flan, by Phil Alexander

I made a tangerine flan, made it for my tea
Wasn't easy, there's no recipe I'm keeping to
I made a tangerine flan, come and share with me
I'll be back in just one minute and I'll have some with you

If you feel a gritty taste, well that just might be some sand
I forgot to wash my hands
Though the taste is rather bland - no don't stop eating
I made this tasty flan with a tin of tangerines
And some mouldy old baked beans
And some shredded magazines - eat up, no cheating

I made a tangerine flan, made it for my tea
Wasn't easy, there's no recipe I'm keeping to
I made a tangerine flan, come and share with me
I'll be back in just one minute and I'll have some with you

I know that you've not stopped to figure out exactly what
That you're eating, 'cause it's hot
And afore you eat a lot
You are wond'ring if it's snot - no it's not, it's knotty
And rather chewy
Now I'm sure that you don' care if what you find in there
Makes you say a little prayer
I don't think it's pubic hair
So don't go huey

I made a tangerine flan, made it for my tea
Wasn't easy, there's no recipe I'm keeping to
I made a tangerine flan, come and share with me
I'll be back in just one minute and I'll have some with you

You feel like throwin', vomitin' or emptyin' your tum
Please don't aim at anyone,
It's just escapin' on the run
And the loo's that way, so please don't hit the sofa
And if you hear see vague traces of what you think might be cream
It's a recurring theme
Well, a little bit extreme
Feeling much too sick to scream
No, I'm sure it isn't semen there all over

I made a tangerine flan, made it for my tea
Wasn't easy, there's no recipe I'm keeping to
I made a tangerine flan, want to share with me?
I'll be back in just one minute and I'll have some with you

Pick out the toenail clippings and the eggshell you can find
And the tangerine-y rind, and the bits of frozen peas
And the mozarella cheese, and the forty-day-old peach
The used tissues underneath, the Mask of Zorro
Then cover it with Worcester sauce and hottest chilli seeds
So that you don't taste the weeds or the long elastic bands
You say it's a taste you hate, well I reckon it tastes great
Don't think 'bout how you're gonna feel tomorrow

I made a tangerine flan, made it for my tea
Wasn't easy, there's no recipe I'm keeping to
I made a tangerine flan, want to share with me?
I'll be back in just one minute and I'll have some with you

No Direction Home : Bob Dylan

Directed by Martin Scorsese no less, what a fine mix.

BBC2 - SEPTEMBER 26TH & 27TH - Be there or be square.

Can't wait myself, apparently we'll see the infamous "Judas" incident, screened for the first time ever.

Another great singer that sang a number of Bob Dylan songs very well was Joan Baez.
She also recorded quite a few good old folk songs and ballads, and interestingly sang male songs as a man rather than change song lyrics. But sometimes she would change a song lyric to make it more meaningful or more musical.

Joan Baez may never have been the most popular of singers, but many have considered her the greatest of singers. Below is her in 1965 singing live Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right', and some other good songs including some folk songs and ballads, as follows ;

1. I'm A Rambler, I'm A Gambler
2. There But For Fortune
3. Copper Kettle
4. Mary Hamilton
5. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
6. I'm Troubled And I Don't Know Why
7. We Shall Overcome
8. With God on Our Side
9. The Joys of Love, or Plaisir d'amour

And in the second part of this concert she sang some more great songs, as follows ;

1. Silver Dagger
2. Oh Freedom
3. She's A Troublemaker
4. The Unquiet Grave
5. It Ain't Me Babe
6. Isn't It Grand
7. 500 Miles
8. Portuguese song
9. The Joys of Love, or Plaisir d'amour

PS. Joan was still doing UK concerts in 2011 at 70 years old, and to some was still inspiring.

Yes and even US President Obama had Joan Baez sing "We Shall Overcome" in the White House in 2010, though she has maybe never exactly been a friend of any government and almost everybody has sung at the White House. She sang many good old traditional folk songs as well as numbers of songs by the great songwriter Bob Dylan (perhaps often singing them better than he sang them himself ?).

Joan Baez, We Shall Overcome ;
