Songs about Dance - Do You Wanna, I Don't Wanna ...

Post by Digiwizz »

There have been some very good songs about dancing, and two that I really like are Do You Wanna Dance and I Don't Wanna Dance ;

Do You Wanna Dance, by Robert Freeman 1958.
Recorded by The Ramones, Johnny Rivers, The Beach Boys and others.

Do you wanna dance and hold my hand ?
Tell me baby I'm your lover man
Oh baby, do you wanna dance ?

Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance

Well do you wanna dance under the moonlight ?
Squeeze me baby all through the night
Oh baby, do you wanna dance ?

Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance

Do you wanna dance and hold my hand ?
Tell me baby I'm your lover man
Oh baby, do you wanna dance ?

Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance

Well do you wanna dance under the moonlight ?
Squeeze me baby all through the night
Oh baby, do you wanna dance ?

Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance
Do you do you do you do you wanna dance

I don't wanna dance, Eddy Grant 1982.

I don't wanna dance
Dance with you baby no more
I'll never do something to hurt you, though
Oh but the feeling is bad
The feeling is bad

I love your personality
But I don't want our love on show
Sometimes I think it's insanity
Girl the way you go

With all of the guys on the corner
Oh baby, you're the latest trick
Oh, you seem to have their number
Look they're dancing still

But I don't wanna dance
Dance with you baby no more
I'll never do something to hurt you, though
Oh but the feeling is bad
The feeling is bad

Baby now the party's over
For us, so I'll be on my way
Now that the things which moved me
Are standing still

I know it's only superstition
Baby, but I won't look back
Even though I feel your music
Baby that is that

I don't wanna dance
Dance with you baby no more
I'll never do something to hurt you, though
Oh but the feeling is bad
The feeling is bad

Don't wanna dance
Don't wanna dance
Don't wanna dance
Don't wanna dance
Don't wanna dance
Don't wanna dance
Don't wanna dance

I don't wanna dance
Dance with you baby no more
I'll never do something to hurt you, though
Oh but the feeling is bad
The feeling is bad

PS. another great 1982 Eddy Grant song was his 'Electric Avenue' and on the same lines
his 'Living on the Frontline' and 'Gimme Hope Jo'Anna' are good.

Two nice songs Digiwizz, and another that I really like is this one ;

Save The Last Dance For Me, by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman 1960.
Recorded by The Drifters, Dolly Parton and others.

You can dance
Ev'ry dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye
Let him hold you tight.
You can smile
Ev'ry smile for the man
Who held your hand
'Neath the pale moonlight.

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmmm

Oh, I know (oh, I know)
That the music's fine
Like sparkling wine
Go and have your fun.
Laugh and sing
But while we're apart
Don't give your heart
To anyone.

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmmm

Baby, don't you know
I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never, never let you go
I love you oh so much.

You can dance (you can dance)
Go and carry on
'Til the night is gone
And it's time to go.
If he asks
If you're all alone
Can he take you home
You must tell him no.

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's your gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmmm

Save the last dance for me, mmmm-hummmm
Save the last dance for me.

Yes Clare, Save The Last Dance For Me is a great song.

There is one dance song I really like the chorus of - Lord Of The Dance - though it has religious origins.

The 1963 Sydney Carter lyric for the Quaker church included bits that followed part of the Bible that some view as anti-Jewish, but the chorus is certainly great ;

Lord Of The Dance.

Dance, then, wherever you may be
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be
And I'll lead you all in the dance, said He.

The tune was lifted from an earlier Shaker church song called Simple Gifts with a lyric that I find less impressive ;

Simple Gifts, by Elder Joseph Brackett 1848

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come round right.

PS. I have no religious connections with these or other churches.
