The Girl Can't Help It - (Simply) The Best - Oh Carol

Post by Clare »

Have been watching a great old Rock And Roll film from 1956, The Girl Can't Help It. Here is the lyric to the title song sung by Little Richard ;

(The) Girl Can't Help It, by Little Richard 1956

She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she walks by, the men folks get engrossed,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she winks an eye, the bread slice turn to toast,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she got a lot, of what they call the most.
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,

The girl can't help it, she was born to please,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
And if she's got, a figure made to squeeze,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
Oh won't you kindly be aware, the girl can't help it.
The girl can't help it,

She mesmerizes, every mother's son,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
If she smiles, the beefsteak becomes well done,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
She makes grandpa feel like twenty one.
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,

The girl can't help it, she was born to please,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
And if I go to her, on bended knees,
She can't help it, the girl can't help it,
Won't you kindly be aware, that I can't help it.
I can't help it,
Because I'm hoping, obviously,
That some day, the answer would be,
The girl can't help it, she's in love with me.

She can't help it, the girl can't help it.

The main song line though fine reminds me a bit of the stupid 'all is fair in love and war' saying - it is common for love, war, religion and politics to be used as excuses for some of the worst of human behaviour - "we can't help it" ?!

Another song I do like, of the many written along the lines of They Are The Best but this time by a woman,
is Tina Turner's The Best ;

The Best, by Tina Turner 1989
(and on album Simply The Best 1991)

I call you when I need you, my heart's on fire
You come to me, come to me wild and wild
You come to me, give me everything I need
Give me a lifetime of promises, and a world of dreams
You speak the language of love, like you know what it means
And it can't be wrong, take my heart and make it strong. Baby

You're simply the best, better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met
I'm stuck on your heart, and hang on every word you say
Tear us apart, baby I would rather be dead

Deep in your heart I see the star of ev'ry night and ev'ry day
In your eyes I get lost, I get washed away
Just as long as I'm here in your arms
I could be in no better place

You're simply the best, better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met
I'm stuck on your heart, and hang on every word you say
Tear us apart, baby I would rather be dead

Each time you leave me, I start losing control
You're walking away with my heart, and my soul
I can feel you, even when I'm alone
Oh baby, don't let go

You're simply the best, better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met
I'm stuck on your heart, and hang on every word you say
Tear us apart, baby I would rather be dead

Ooh you're the best !

Yes Clare your Tina Turner's The Best is very good. A song I like along the lines of 'You're maybe not the best but I love you' id the early Neil Sedaka song Oh Carol ;

Oh Carol, Neil Sedaka 1959

Oh Carol, I am but a fool.
Darling I love you, though you treat me cruel.
You hurt me, and you made me cry
But if you leave me, I will surely die.

Darling, there will never be another
'Cause I love you so.
Don't ever leave me,
Say you'll never go.

I will always want you for my sweetheart
No matter what you do
Oh Carol, I'm so in love with you.
