William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Post by Colin »

Romeo and Juliet starts in Verona in Northern Italy. Shakespeare's main characters are the Capulets which are the Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Juliet and Tybalt - and also the Montagues being Lord Montague, Lady Montague, Romeo and Benvolio. Other characters in the play include the Prince of Verona, Count Paris, Mercutio, Nurse and Friar Lawrence.

The families are at war with each other but Romeo doesn't want to fight because he likes Juliet who he met at a party at the house of the Capulets.

Mercutio's the first person to die in the play. When Mercutio is killed, it leaves a big gap in the play. All his energy suddenly disappears. His death is really sad - it should never have happened.

The Friar gives advice to Romeo and Juliet, and hopes to end the feud between the families. But at the end of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo drinks poison and then Juliet kills herself.

Like many people Colin, I find Shakespeare hard to read.

It may have some good plots, story lines and some good history, that might help a writer, but I do not see it as helping in learning English !!

But I would like to see some more good summaries of Shakespeare's other plays ?
